Here's a link to doing it with a cell phone headset. There are some other interesting tricks on the site, too.

This is standard 2.5mm stereo jack. It has 3 connectors: tip, sleeve and ring. It's the same all over the world. And microphone mute button acts as shutter release.

I've tried this hack:
I inserted the plug and pressed the mute button but it did not work I even cut off the ear-piece, in case that made a difference, still no go. |

Cruise eBay - there're any number of Chinese-made look-alikes of the Canon RS-60E3 remote cable available for $10.00 - $12.00 as "Buy-it-now" items - sometimes less if you're sufficiently obsessed to wait out the entire bidding war and pounce with a bid at the last instant for bragging rights that you "saved" a couple bucks. (or start all over again because some other fool got in just under the wire with a higher bid - geesh, some things just aren't worth the aggravation . . .)

I used this website to make mine, I added an exact identical swich so I can control focussing and shutter release separated. This makes it even better
Here a link with that explains it fully http://www.covingtoninnovations.com/dslr/CanonRelease.html QUOTE(Aviator @ May 10 2005, 03:56 AM) |

I used this link and was able to pick up the components to meet my needs from Maplins. I guess radio shack or any component supplier would have the bits.

For what it's worth, I made one using a 2.5mm plug, about 4' of thin speaker wire, a toggle switch, and an empty film canister
Cut a hole in the film canister lid, mount the switch in it. Use a nail to puncture a hole in the bottom. The just solder it all up, and pop the lid onto the canister. About $10 Canadian. |

In the UK you can buy a 'hands free' mobile phone kit for £1 at the Pound Shop. Make sure the connector is the 2.5mm stereo plug.
Cut the earpiece off, check that the 'cut' cable ends are not 'short circuit', plug the 2.5mm plug into the camera and away you go. Okay the button is fairly flimsy but it does the job and I've already had some good results with it. |

Not to grave-dig here, but I posted last Oct as a guest (2 replies ago). This time I have a picture of the remote. Very simple project, I see no reason to ever buy a remote from anyone, or to sacrifice a headset that wouldn't look as classy as this anyway.
The switch is perfect for long bulb exposures, but I could have used a momentary button instead, or both. |
