I was just wondering, would it be difficult / feasible to add a curve for each channel in the displayed histogram on the 300D ?
Or maybe just display the existing histogram as a line curve, not filled in, then draw another curve for each of the RGB channels on the same graph. Or if too hard, just draw / display a dot of the corresponding color when the histogram in that specific channel has been clipped. Let's say a red dot on the right side for example in case the red channel is overexposed. Or, if still too hard, be able to select one single channel for the histogram (for example people who shoot with IR modded cameras mostly need the red channel), and maybe be able to use a button when in info mode to switch the active channel (less important) Or, use one of the non-functionning custom function settings to just switch the histogram from luminance (existing) to only red channel display (let's call this a "IR-oriented histogram" custom function) What do you think ? I don't really have much experience with the firmware complexity so I don't really realize what's hard to do and what's not smile.gif Thanks ! |

The answer is no. Or it's a long way. What we did, we just enabled some functions intended for a different cameras that were blocked in 300D. That's all. We didn't write it. We just hacked things a little bit here and there. That's all.

ok thanks.
anyway, if I wanted to play a bit with the firmware myself, is it possible from a windows OS or do I need linux for something ? is there an emulator or something to test the firmware before uploading it to the actual camera ? if the uploaded firmware is broken in some way, will it completely prevent me from updating to a working firmware again (> making the camera totallu unusable) ? thanks ! |

The procedures used to hack firmware are documented in the different threads on this forum. It's not quite organized, but it's all here. And you possibly can use windows for disassembly and modifications. However most of the work was done on Linux.
There is no emulator. And uploading the "broken" firmware can make your camera dead for good. It did happen to the original hacker Wasia. So like with any hacks, use it at your own risk. And I say again that modifications in this hack are only limited to enabling some features that were intended for another camera and left here, but blocked in 300D. There is no new code. Just a couple of bytes here and there to get around and get them enabled. And most of the disabled features don't even work. |
